The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged Members of Parliament to approach their legislative duties with objectivity, sound judgement and a firm commitment to the national interest.
He cautioned lawmakers against allowing political affiliations and partisan differences to disrupt parliamentary business, noting that Ghanaians have high expectations of the legislature.
Bagbin made the appeal in his opening remarks when Parliament resumed sitting on Tuesday, November 3.
Addressing the House at the start of proceedings, he reminded MPs that their mandate extends beyond representing their respective political parties and requires them to put the interests of the Ghanaian people first in their deliberations and decisions.
He emphasised that Parliament plays a central role in Ghana’s democratic governance and urged MPs to conduct themselves in ways that uphold the trust and confidence placed in them by the electorate.
Bagbin noted that Ghanaians expect their representatives to exercise sound judgement, uphold the country’s constitutional framework and perform their duties with diligence, integrity and a strong sense of responsibility.
“The expectations of the Ghanaian people are high and rightly so, they expect us to exercise sound judgement, uphold the 1992 Constitution and discharge our responsibilities with diligence, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the national interest.
“Our political differences are real. And in a democracy, they are legitimate. They must not, however, stand in the way of the work we have been sent here to do. I therefore call on all of us to approach this meeting with a new sense of purpose, mutual respect and collective responsibility.”
