Election 2024: “Government should prioritize fiscal discipline,” urges Osafo-Maafo

Senior Presidential Advisor Yaw Osafo-Maafo has urged the government to practice fiscal discipline in anticipation of the December 2024 elections.

Addressing the media in Accra, the former Senior Minister underscored the significance of curbing government spending, particularly in an election year.

Osafo-Maafo emphasized the importance of adhering to budgetary limits, particularly in light of Ghana’s participation in an IMF program.

“People will be called upon to tighten their belts and that means hardship and we should avoid it. Because, you see, a country works responsibly with a budget, and you should obey your budget.

“When you have an IMF programme, what it really means is that they will make sure that indirectly, the fiscal responsibility law is kept because the IMF will not allow you to go beyond certain limits of your expenditure.”
